Safe Places came to our group today

Someone from Sheffield Safe Places came to talk to us about what they do. The aim of Safe Places is to offer support to adults who may feel vulnerable when they are out and about in Sheffield. If someone needs help - for example they are lost, ill or frightened - then they can enter the nearest Safe Place to get help. Safe Places can also support someone who is the victim of a disability hate crime while out in Sheffield.

There are currently 48 places in the Sheffield area that have been approved as “safe places”. This means that staff there know how to offer help to anyone who is vulnerable and feels scared, ill or lost. The Safe Places include public places such as libraries and museums, some GP surgeries and several shops, as well as Heeley City Farm where the Safe Places team is based.

How do I join the Safe Places scheme?

You can register to be a Safe Places member here. Alternatively, you can request a paper application by emailing safeplaces@heeleyfarm.org.uk or phoning 0114 250 5106.

How does it work?

After registering, you will receive your free Safe Places pack in the post. The pack includes a Keep Safe Card. You should write the name and phone number of a helper or carer on this card and carry it round with you when you are out in Sheffield.

Safe Places members also have access to a voice-activated App on their phones. If you need help, the App will show you where the nearest Safe Place is. You can go into this place, show a member of staff your Keep Safe Card and tell them what the problem is. Staff will give you the support you need, including contacting the helper on the Keep Safe Card and calling the emergency services if necessary.
